Tomorrow.Blue Economy, the Brazilian edition of the international summit dedicated to the Blue Economy, opens this Wednesday (Nov 26) at Caminho Niemeyer in Niterói. Running through Thursday (Nov 27), the event gathers industry leaders, global experts, policymakers, and the public to address opportunities and challenges in the sustainable use of ocean and water resources under the banner “The debate that makes waves.”
The Blue Economy represents a growth model integrating environmental preservation, social equity, and economic expansion. According to a joint study by the United Nations and the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), the ocean economy already accounts for roughly 20% of Brazil’s GDP and generates between $3 trillion and $6 trillion globally each year.
Niterói is hosting the second edition of the event in partnership with the Municipal Government—via the Executive Secretariat—and organized by iCities, a smart cities hub affiliated with Fira Barcelona. Niterói Mayor Rodrigo Neves highlighted that hosting the summit reinforces the city’s commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and economic opportunities leveraging its coastal assets.
Program and Key Highlights
The event schedule centers on actionable solutions and commercial opportunities within the marine and maritime sectors. Notable speakers include biologist Richard Rasmussen, UN Tourism Gastronomy Ambassador Saulo Jennings, and Trinidadian marine scientist Diva Amon, a global authority on deep-sea biology.
Caio Castro, CEO of iCities, noted that the 2025 edition represents a milestone for the sector in Brazil:
“This year, the event returns even stronger, reaffirming our mission to position Niterói and Brazil at the forefront of maritime development and the offshore energy transition.”
The conference space at Caminho Niemeyer features four dedicated zones:
- Technical Congress: Hosted at the Teatro Popular.
- Praça do Povo (People’s Square): Featuring workshops, brand activations, and cultural events.
- Fisheries Zone: Highlighting traditional knowledge and local seafood gastronomy.
- The Dome: Showcasing naval industry assets, offshore technology, and blue economy innovations.
Community Engagement
Leading up to the summit, local residents participated in community activation events throughout November, including the Blue Running event and the Blue Wave Circuit. Through November 22, the Blue Economy Arena at Icaraí Beach offered sports, recreation, and environmental education programming.
